Little Foxes

“Catch us the foxes, the little foxes that spoil the vines, for our vines have tender grapes.”
Song of Solomon 2:15 NKJV
This reminder from Solomon could be applied in so many areas of our lives.
As I look around, I am seeing how the little foxes in my life are tiny things that I have left undone. Instead of putting the clean sheets away in the linen closet, they sit on the cedar chest at the foot of our bed. A bag of trash sits at the top of the stairs waiting for someone to bring it down and out to the trash bin. The little hand-held vacuum lies on its side on the floor, just feet from where I sit, instead of being returned to the cupboard where it belongs.
Many of these little incomplete tasks would take just a minute or two to tend to. Leave enough little things undone and in the blink of an eye it seems you’ve got more mess than you have time or energy. Little “foxes” all over the house robbing your peace and sapping your strength. These little foxes definitely try to steal my joy.
Order promotes peace. God is a God of order, and He created us to take authority in our lives. When I don’t catch the little foxes, they spoil the sweet fruit of peace in my life and in my home.
Instead of waiting until there are so many small undone tasks that I feel overwhelmed and immobilized, I realize that I need to act daily, moment-by-moment taking care of things while they are small. I need to put the clean dishes and laundry away right away. I must deal with mail and papers as they come in. And, most importantly, I need to follow my own very useful rule, “Don’t put it down; put it back.”
I am going to take 15 minutes and see how many of these little foxes I can chase down right now. Are there any little foxes you need to catch?
